Title
Pre-provision with Windows Autopilot
Introduction
This is related to imaging computers through Intune with Windows Autopilot, and a brief rundown of the Pre-Provision process.
Purpose
This is for any technician engaged in the process of imaging laptops.
Prerequisites
Technician should be an Intune Administrator or higher before taking any of the steps within.
Details
This process can be used for Hybrid AD joined computers and Azure only computers as well. The pre-provision process does not require the user’s password or MFA to enroll a device, Intune Administrators can assign the user and then seal the device making it ready for deployment to a user.
Subsection 1: Assigning the Device
Navigate to Windows Autopilot Devices in the Intune Admin Center, from this page you can search the device by serial number and assign it to the user. This is crucial for the pre-provision process.
Subsection 2: Pre-Provision Process on the device
Once you have assigned a device to a user, you can begin the setup process on the device. Ensure you are hardwired (if possible) or at least have line of sight to active directory (in the case of hybrid deployments). Once you are presented with the screen to input your credentials you can hit the Win key 5 times and will be presented with the pre-provision prompt.
Troubleshooting
Issue 1: Failure to Image
-
Solution: Check network connectivity, hardwired ethernet connection is recommended but not required for this to work. Line of Sight to AD is required for Hybrid AD deployments.
Issue 2: Intune Errors
-
Solution: There are various error codes for a variety of topics that may be encountered, enough to fill an entire separate document. Please consult with Microsoft Learn for any questions on specific references to error messages. Collecting diagnostic logs to provide to Microsoft is also helpful if you are unable to identify the issue purely on the error message and code.
